Spotlight Saturday: Mewtwo

Spotlight Saturday is getting a bit of a mix-er-up from now on. I’ve removed the anime section, because… who really cares about it? This first segment is going to be an overview on the pokemon and I’ll go over the next ones as we reach there.

Mewtwo is out first Legendary Pokemon into the mix! Everyone knows him, he’s probably THE most well known pokemon next to Pikachu. This section is to focus on it’s origins, trivia, and other stuff like that. Mewtwo is a Psychic-type pokemon based off of the pokemon Mew, (that being based off of cats) genetics, and aliens. His name also comes from Mew, because he’s a clone of the small little guy. Mewtwo is a pretty cool dude, but did you know, he is the only pokemon to have a birthday? His birthday is February 8th, so when that day comes around, let’s all celebrate!
(The segement after the first one is supposed to be the Pre-evolution corner… but Mewtwo doesn’t have one, so this one IS a little on the short side, apologies)

Mewtwo is placed in Ubers, as you all know. He’s one of the strongest pokemon out there and most legendaries are placed in that tier anyway. However, there are some good strategies for our genetic friend but I’ll just toss some ideas around. I call this segment Spitballing! (Unoriginal, but go with it)
  • Mewtwo doesn’t have his own exclusive move for any ol’  reason! Psystrike is an excellent move to have on him.
  • He also learns precious moves like Recover, Taunt, and the ever common Toxic, making him a pretty good wall, too. Keep in mind, if you want to use moves like these, you should probably come armed with Leftovers or a Focus Sash.
  • If you are wanting a Choice Scarf Mewtwo, moves like Aura Sphere, Flamethrower, and Thunderbolt can come in handy. He also can learn Trick for all you prankster out there!
  • Mewtwo is focused on Special Attack, so giving him a Rash or Modest nature is recommended. If you want to focus on his brilliant Speed, though, Timid is the way to go.
  • A good way to stall your opponent is to utilize Mewtwo’s perfect speed. Give him Calm Mind, Substitute, and maybe a Light Screen/Reflect from another pokemon to really annoy your opponent.
  • Being a Psychic-type, Mewtwo is weak against Ghost and Dark types, along with Bug types. Pokemon like Scizor, Gengar, and Umbreon are VERY common competitively, so you better have a pokemon who can counter it or come armed with some good moves like Fire Blast, Psystrike, or Focus Blast!
  • If you are in a supporting team like a Rain Dance or Sunny Day team, put Mewtwo out as your main man, ESPECIALLY for a Rain Dance one. He’s one of the few pokemon who can hold his ground that doesn’t have an ability or Water-typing benfitting him. With his Thunder attack, he’s all good, and with U-Turn, he can switch out whenever he wants!
